'Twas Two Hours Before Worship'

'Twas two hours before worship,' and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
No visions of heaven danced in their heads.
Ma in our curlers, and I, what a sap!
Had just settled down, "Dick Tracy" in lap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
What to my wondering eyes should appear,
My neighbor's lawn mower, and it was in high gear.
I though to myself and just had to say,
"Just a fool would save that for the Lord's Day."
I nodded my head and was turning around,
I looked in the mirror and saw with a frown:
A little round mouth drawn up in a bow,
Stubbornness, conceit, that only I should know.
I haven't been to worship since - what was the day?
The day before Mamma went on her Good Way.
I'm part of the church, have a spouse that would go,
And we all could have spirits as white as snow.
I woke up my mate, and said, "How about you?"
She smiled and said sweetly, --"Bible study, too!"
We spoke not a word but went right to work,
Dressed up all the kids and they were so pert.
They heard us exclaim as we drove out of sight,
"Two services this morning -- and another tonight!"
