The Value of a Soul

Jesus Christ asked this question over 1900 years ago and to this day it has never been successfully answered. "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul." (Matthew 16:26). Indeed, this shows the estimate Christ put upon the soul - it is worth more than the whole world.

In spite of the inestimable value of the soul, many today are willing to sell their soul for a very cheap price. Sometimes it is given in exchange for education, or comforts for the home, or for carnal pleasures. "So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God" (Luke 12:21). The sad fact must be faced that some day wealth, education, comfort and carnal pleasures must all be given up, and if we have not saved our soul, we shall have nothing but sorrow and despair throughout eternity!

Jesus recognized the true value of the soul and thereby was willing to suffer and die on Calvary's cross so that men's souls might not be lost forever (John 3:16). When we see the cost of our soul's salvation, how foolish it is on man's part not to take advantage of Christ's sacrifice by obedience unto the Gospel. "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him?" (Hebrews 2:3).
