There Was Purpose In His Steps

Recently, Ben F. Vick wrote an article commenting on the "Wise Counsel From George S. Benson." Dr. George S. Benson, was President Emeritus of Harding University. Brother Vick worked for brother Benson while a student at Harding. In his evaluation of brother Benson, Ben said, "There was purpose in his steps even when he was aged." Now when someone says their is purpose in another’s steps, he means their is direction, an end to be attained, objective and determination to arrive at a certain destination or goal in life. Have you ever thought about whether or not there is purpose in your steps? Where are your steps leading? Who will follow in your steps? Do you want your family to follow your steps? Will your steps lead to heaven or hell? Penetrating questions aren’t they?

Everyone in life needs direction. No matter how powerful and rich one might be, they need the directions of the Lord! The Psalmist declared, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way" (Psa.37:23). Man is not capable of directing his own steps religiously, "O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jer.10:23).

No matter where you go or what you do, you cannot hide from God! "For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings" (Job 34:21). The Hebrew writer informs us, "Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do" (Heb.4:13).

Paul says the Christian should ". . .walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham." (Rom.4:12). The same kind of faith is needed if one is to be acceptable unto God. The Hebrew writer gives Abraham as an example of faith following the directions of God (Heb.11:17-29).

Whose steps should we follow religiously? Only the steps of Christ, for they alone will lead to life and it everlasting! "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps" (I Pet.2:21).

My friend, will you follow the steps Christ has laid down to become a child of His? Will you not only accept Him as the divine son of God (Jno.8:24), but will you repent of your sins (Acts 2:38), confess Him to be the son of God (Matt.10:32), and will you be immersed for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38)? Will your steps lead your family to worship with the Lord’s people at 111 South Curry Street this Lord’s day? Just exactly where are your steps leading?
