12 Reasons
Why One Should Attend
Every Service Of the Church
by: Oran Rhodes
We often say this subject should not even
have to be discussed, but it always will be because of the nature of humanity.
There has been article after article written, poem after poem composed, and
funny remark after funny remark made upon the subject of attendance, yet it
always comes to mind, was it of any value? Did I reach the heart of anyone? Will
someone finally be jarred into seeing the need?
There are several factors involved in the
problems of attendance, such as habit, lack of spirituality, lack of
understanding, and on and on. Basically, however, it comes down to motive and
attitude as being the necessary ingredients. We know as well as anyone that many
are indeed fortunate because of health or circumstances to be able to assemble
when they do, and as often as they do. We do not speak of these, but of many,
many more who are able yet by choice do not attend. Excuses are endless, it
seems, but I want to share with you twelve reasons why every Christian should
attend every service possible.
- "And let us
consider one another to provoke unto love and good works: Not forsaking the
assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but exhorting
one another; and as much the more as ye see the day approaching"
(Hebrews 10: 24,25)
- "But seek ye first
the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be
added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).
- "Obey them that
have the rule over you, and submit yourselves; for they watch for your
souls, as they must give an account, that they may do it with joy, and not
with grief, for that is unprofitable for you" (Hebrews 13:17).
- "Then said Jesus
unto His disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and
take up his cross, and follow Me" (Matthew 16:24).
- "Put them in mind
to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready
to every good work" (Titus 3:1).
- "Therefore, to him
that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin" (James
4:17)
- "How shall we
escape, if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him"
(Hebrews 2:3).
- "Let all things be
done unto edifying" (I Corinthians 14:26b).
- "Ye are the light
of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men
light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it
giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in
heaven" (Matthew 5:14-16).
- "For even hereunto
are ye called; Because Christ also suffered for us, leaving an example that
ye should follow His steps" (I Peter 2:21. [Also see] Matthew 18:20
and Matthew 28:18-20).
- "Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work
of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the
Lord" (I Corinthians 15:58).
- "But if we walk in
the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and
the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin" (I John 1:7).
If we are not motivated by these inspired
words which relate to our whole life as a Christian, then nothing that I can say
by way of human wisdom shall have any effect. May we all search our hearts in
the light of God's Word, and be motivated to attend regularly all of the
services of the church.
