The Lord's Supper

by: Gary Colley

On the dark night of our Lord's betrayal, at the feast of the Passover in Jerusalem, a great memorial was established. This solemn, sweet, tender, age-unending monument shall always be upheld by His faithful followers, especially since He commanded it (Matthew 26:28, I Corinthians 11:17, 25, 34).

The disciples were likewise commanded to assemble together in one place (Hebrews 10:25). One of the purposes of their gathering was to eat of the Lord's Supper in their assembly ( I Corinthians 11:17, 28, 33). The New Testament, in no place, teaches that the Lord's Supper was taken at any time outside the assembly.

The first day of the week was the time of our Lord's resurrection and the establishment of His church on earth. Those whom the apostles taught "to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:20), "continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship and IN BREAKING OF BREAD, and in prayers" (Acts 2:42). The time that they did this "steadfastly" was when they assembled on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). Their giving of support to the cause was also on the first day of the week (I Corinthians 16:2).

This memorial each first day of the week (Acts 20:7) is commanded by the Lord (I Corinthians 11:2, 14:37, 16:1-2). The man who misses these appointments sins against God (I John 3:4). He also misses the greatest fellowship and communion with the people of God. How can anyone forget to commemorate one who has meant so much to us??
