The Power of Christ's Words

“Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who digged and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well builded.” (Luke 6:47-48).

Jesus’ words are powerful and effective in the lives of humans. Here Jesus points out the necessity of hearing and doing the things that he says. Imagine someone sitting within hearing distance of Jesus and not listening to what He was saying. While it is difficult to form such a picture in our minds, why would Christ have emphasized the point that we need to hear His word? Simply put there were obviously those of His day that was not hearing Him.

Today we have opportunities on nearly every corner to study and learn the words of Jesus. For example, our weekly bulletin has various biblical points that are discussed and is convenient to read and study as your schedule allows. Further, nearly all congregations of the Lord’s people have Bible classes and sermons that provide useful, interesting discussion and study that is designed to promote Christian growth.

The benefits of hearing the words of Jesus are detailed in Luke 6:48 where He states those that hear Him are like an individual that builds a house on a firm foundation. We would never think of building any kind of building without providing a firm footing or foundation for the structure. Yet in our lives we often do not make plans to prepare by digging deep and then building on a rock. When the storms of life begin to come and our lives shatter and crumble, it very likely is because we have not built on Jesus and His “sayings”.

Happily we can look around us and see folks that over the years have patiently and faithfully built on the Lord, and they weather the storm just fine. Jesus said “when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well builded.”
Friend, a quick review is in order.

1) The words of Jesus are readily available to all.
2) The words of Jesus are effective in the lives of those that hear them.
3) The words of Jesus can be seen to produce a firm foundation in the lives of our faithful brethren.
4) Yet many refuse to hear, accept and follow the words of Jesus.

Let me encourage you to build a life that has the solid rock foundation of Jesus’ words; it is not to late, why not start now?
